Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach that helps people process distressing or traumatic experiences that continue to affect their thoughts, emotions, body, relationships, or daily life.

Sometimes, difficult experiences can feel as though they are still happening in the present. You may understand intellectually that an event is in the past, while your nervous system continues to respond as though you are in danger. EMDR helps the brain and nervous system process these experiences so that the memories become less distressing and feel more firmly connected to the past.

During EMDR therapy, your therapist will guide you through a structured process that includes identifying memories, emotions, beliefs, and physical sensations connected to the experience. While briefly focusing on aspects of the memory, you will engage in bilateral stimulation, which may include guided eye movements, alternating sounds, or other forms of alternating sensory input.

EMDR does not require you to describe every detail of a traumatic experience or spend extensive time talking about the event. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to establish safety, develop appropriate coping and grounding skills, and determine when you are ready to begin processing.

What Can EMDR Help With?

EMDR may be helpful for people experiencing:

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Childhood trauma

  • Complex or repeated trauma

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Grief and loss

  • Relationship trauma

  • Abuse or interpersonal violence

  • Distressing memories

  • Phobias and fears

  • Shame or persistent negative beliefs about yourself

  • Emotional responses that feel disproportionate to current circumstances

EMDR can also be used to address experiences that may not meet the criteria for PTSD but continue to influence how you feel, think, or respond in the present.
